Fatal Injury to Forbes Employee near Gilliam

Tragically, a member of Operating Engineers Local 987 was fatally injured while performing work associated with building a new Manitoba Hydro Transmission Line.

We are profoundly saddened to lose a worker at a project site where the project owner, contractors and skilled trades unions have always made safety a mutual first priority.

At this very difficult time, our focus is on supporting the worker’s family and workplace colleagues. We extend our deepest sympathy to family, friends and colleagues of the individual.

OE987, Manitoba Building Trades, the Allied Hydro Council and their affiliated member unions will seek a vigorous investigation to determine the cause of the accident and to take every step possible to ensure that our workforce is safe each and every day.

We are grateful to our members deployed as emergency paramedics as well as other support personnel who mobilized to attend to the scene and provide care.

As an organization, this is a circumstance we never want to face and we will work with our business partners to make every possible effort to avoid facing such a tragedy in the future.

In respect of the family’s privacy and to protect the integrity of the pending investigation, we will not make any additional comments on this tragic incident.
