Who We Are
The Operating Engineers of Manitoba Local 987 (OE987) is a union that has served Manitobans in healthcare since 1950. Fifty percent of our members hold a variety of healthcare positions including healthcare aide, maintenance worker, housekeeper, clerk, power engineer, and dietary aide, to name a few. The other fifty percent of our members work in industries such as pipeline construction, manufacturing and processing, and general construction.
Our diversity is our strength: we know how to serve our members with a wide-range of careers, and we serve them well. We are known for negotiating some of the best contracts in the province for our members, and providing opportunities for training and growth. We also pride ourselves on our small member-to-representative ratio, meaning our members get the attention they deserve. A member simply has to pick up the phone and call a representative to get results.
As part of The International Union of Operating Engineers, founded in 1896, OE987 is part of a 460,000-member organization that spans North America. This means we have a strong support network, and over a century of experience to draw on. We are also proudly one of the 23 local unions across Canada that form the Canadian Conference of Operating Engineers. However, the local union is governed by an Executive Board elected from the membership, by the membership.
