OE987 Business Manager Comments on 2019-20 Provincial Budget

"The Pallister government is like a reverse Robin Hood: they rob from everyone and give to their rich friends."

OE987 Business Manager Marc Lafond attacks the Pallister government’s reckless disregard for health care and infrastructure in our province. This is yet another austerity budget where the needs of Manitobans are not being met. Read more below:

On Infrastructure

As COO of OE987 I am very disappointed that this government is not investing more in our ageing roads and other projects. Such projects not only build and enhance our infrastructure but provide much-needed work for Manitobans.

There is a serious infrastructure deficit in our province. The Association of Manitoba Municipalities has estimated it to be $11B. Pallister’s government is leaving infrastructure spending the same for yet another year when it should, in fact, be increased.

It’s not for lack of money. It is my understanding that Manitoba is failing to utilize all of the available federal infrastructure funding. Why?

They have a single-minded focus on cutting the deficit and cutting the PST. This money is needed to address the health, education and infrastructure deficit.

Health Care

Health care is taking one of the largest hits dropping $120 million to $6.65 billion, and most of this is because of a drop in capital spending.

This is the complete opposite of what we should be doing. We need to invest in our ageing hospital infrastructure and equipment.

Our health care workers are overworked, unsafe, and underpaid and this budget shows that they are doing nothing to address this.

The Pallister government is like a reverse Robin Hood: they rob from everyone and give to their rich friends.

In solidarity,

Marc Lafond
